S&R Foundation established the Ryuji Ueno Award for Ion Channels or Barrier Function Research (commonly known as the “Ueno Award”) in partnership with the American Physiological Society (APS) in 2002 . The Ueno Award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in ion channels or epithelial barrier function.

From 2013- 2020, S&R Foundation renewed its collaboration with APS to present the Ueno Award, with a variation in focus. For the last several years, the award was presented to an early career investigator demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in wound healing, tissue remodeling, and/or organ regeneration.  After nearly two decades, the 2020 winner marked the last year of the Ueno Award.  S&R Foundation is grateful to APS for their continued support.
