Dr. Aihara has an extensive background in gastrointestinal physiology and pharmacology. His research has largely focused on the regulatory mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal mucosal/epithelial homeostasis, including secretion/ion transport, tissue injury and repair, and stem cell function. The current focus of his laboratory is to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms of gastric epithelial repair of injuries, from small to large scale, by utilizing in vivo animal and in vitro organoid culture models. His team also investigates barrier function in metaplastic gastric epithelium induced by Helicobacter pylori or ulceration, in hopes to advance current therapeutic strategies.
